Motley Fool Thoughts v01

Usually, I don’t like to promote certain products or companies; however, today I wanted to write a bit about my experience with the Motley Fool.

I don’t remember how I found out about these guys, but back in the late 1990s, somehow I discovered the Motley Fool’s books that covered their basic investment philosophy (The Motley Fool Investment Guide) as well as their alternate approaches with respect to their own crafted terminology of Rule Breakers and Rule Makers (Rule Breakers Rule Makers). I’ll write more about these at a later date.

After initially investing small sums of money that I had saved as a school teacher in the late 1990s, and losing that money because I invested in just one risky Rule Breaker stock (not knowing anything about how to diversify), when the stocks nosedived in the dot-com bubble, I got away from investing as I just didn’t have the time for it. It wasn’t until the mid-2010’s that I got back into it and bought subscriptions to the Motley Fool Stock Advisor and Motley Fool Rule Breaker newsletters (not sure why they still call them “newsletters” as that is old-school terminology in our new digital age; and it’s interesting in witnessing the Motley Fool’s own business evolution as they went from primarily selling books to selling subscription to their “newsletters” on their website).

Whatever the case, on a monthly basis in their Stock Advisory portfolio, David and Tom Gardner each announce one stock pick – the first on the first Thursday of the month and the second on the third Thursday of the month. As I have been following their picks over the past three years, the performance of some of their picks has been incredible. Of course, we are still in the longest bull market in our nation’s history, so that’s probably part of it too. When the market tanked back in the late fall of 2018, these guys didn’t look so good as many of their portfolios lost ground to the market.

The Motley Fool also offers at least six different free podcasts, which I’ll discuss more at a later date.
